Posted by: Omaku Cephas on April 15, 2014

South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has told his murder trial he was heartbroken when he saw the body of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.I crouched down over her and I checked to see if she was breathing or if she had a pulse, he said.

The prosecution has now finished five days of gruelling cross-examination, which has seen the athlete break down on several occasions.

Before his cross-examination ended, the court was shown a photograph of the toilet covered in blood where Ms Steenkamp was shot in February 2013.

Oscar Pistorius Breaks Down in Court During Trial.

Mr Pistorius, 27, said that after shooting through the toilet door at what he thought were intruders, he realised he may have mistakenly killed his girlfriend, a 29-year-old model and law graduate.

He said he tried to break down the door with his shoulder, before using a cricket bat, all the time screaming in panic.

But the double-amputee sprinter said he stopped screaming when he finally opened the door and saw the body.

When asked why, he replied, his voice trembling with emotion: I was heartbroken overcome with sadness.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said the athlete had deliberately killed his girlfriend following an argument.

You fired four shots through the door whilst knowing that she was standing behind the door. She was locked into the bathroom and you armed yourself with the sole purpose of shooting and killing her, he said.

Mr Pistorius replied: That is not true.

He has argued he mistook her for an intruder. The athlete dubbed the Blade Runner faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder.

John Utaka Tips Eagles for History in Brazil- Report

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on April 15, 2014

Sivasspor Nigerian forward John Utaka has backed the African champions to make history and become the first blcak nation to win the World Cup in Brazil.

In an EXCLUSIVE interview with African Football, Utaka says he will be disappointed not to make coach Stephen Keshis squad for Brazil.

I’m still available to play for Nigeria. I will be disappointed not to play at the World Cup, but I will hold no grudges if I do not, the 32-year-old, who played for the Super Eagles at the 2002 and 2010 tournament said.

John Utaka Says He Will Be Disappointed Not to Play a Role for the Super Eagles in Brazil.

The former Portsmouth of England winger believes the Eagles will go far in Brazil.

The team did well to win the Africa Cup of Nations and they will do well at the World Cup also, he added.

They could reach the semi-final and even win the World Cup. We have won the Olympics, why not the World Cup now?

We have to be optimistic and push forward.

We were not rated to win the 1996 Olympics, but we did, beating the likes of Brazil and Argentina on the way.

Utaka have scored thrice since returning from injury, including the match winner against Turkish Super Lig leaders Galatasaray last weekend.

Iniesta Focused On Winning the Copa Del Rey

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on April 15, 2014

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta expects his side to put their on and off-field troubles behind and focus on beating Real Madrid to clinch the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Spaniard admits a large part of the Catalans’ ongoing campaign hangs on beating Real in the Spanish Cup final in Valencia.

“The team is able to play well and win” Iniesta said during a media briefing ahead of Wednesday’s Cup ‘El Clasico’ at the Mestalla. “It would be a huge joy for our supporters. We only have thoughts of winning the trophy.”

Andres Iniesta Wants to Win the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona has endured a difficult season which culminated in a 14-month transfer ban, handed them by the world football’s governing body for signing minors, against which they have said they will appeal.

The Nou Camp outfit could now add the Copa del Rey to the Spanish Super Cup it won earlier in the year, having being eliminated from the Champions League byAtletico Madrid and with hopes for a La Liga title defence hanging in the balance, following the 1-0 loss to Granada over the weekend.

They trail leaders Atletico by four points with five more matches to the end of the season.

“The cup has always been important. It’s a trophy” he added. “The big demands of recent years have made it seem more important than ever, but I wouldn’t say that just because we win the cup we can say that we’ve saved the season.”

Real Madrid will be without winger Cristiano Ronaldo due to a muscle injury, but Iniesta believes the ‘Los Blancos’s’ mentality will always remain the same, regardless of the Portuguese’s availability.

“Madrid’s general idea won’t change without Ronaldo. We know about their virtues, we understand their potential. But at the end of the day, what really matters is that we perform well,” Iniesta said.

Arsenal Shifts Attention to Mandzukic After Conceding Costas Loss to Chelsea- Report

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on April 15, 2014

Mario Mandzukic has emerged as Arsenal’s principal centre-forward target after the Gunners admitted defeat to Chelsea in their pursuit of Diego Costa.

Arsene Wenger showed an interest in Costa in January but baulked at both the price — thought to be in excess of £37million — and Atletico Madrid’s stern reluctance to allow their star player to leave with the club fighting for the title and thriving in the Champions League.

Standard Sport understands Arsenal have made a fresh enquiry only to be told that the forward is expected to move to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. Indeed, insiders believe Costa’s move to Chelsea is virtually a done deal.

The injury sustained by Costa, who suffered a deep cut to his leg in colliding with a post as he scored his side’s second goal in the 2-0 weekend win at Getafe, is unlikely to disrupt Chelsea’s transfer plans this summer.

Arsenal are far more optimistic, however, about their chances of securing the signature of Croatia international Mandzukic, in whom they have shown considerable interest.

Chukwumerije Dazzles At German Open

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on April 15, 2014

Barely a week after clinching gold medal at the 35th Belgian Open, captain of Nigeria’s taekwondo team to the 2011 All Africa Games, Uche Perez Chukwumerije, at the weekend in Hamburg made it to the last eight of the German Open.

Chukwumerije, who had to fight through injury, which he copped on his way to victory at the Belgian Open last week was impressive in his fist round fight against Serikzhan Abdrassilove of Kazakhstan.

The tactical encounter saw the two athletes fighting safe but it was the Nigerian champion that emerged winner with a 2-1 victory. His second fight the last eight (quarterfinal) pitched the 2011 All Africa Games gold medallist against, the current military world champion, Sajjad Mardani of Iran. The Iranian, who was one of the top rated athletes in the mens +87kg category of the competition had earlier this year claimed gold medal at the 2014 Dutch Open when he defeated Olympics champion, Gabons Anthony Obame. Mardani knew that he had to be at his best to overcome Chukwumerije.

The Chukwumerije Brothers Have Impressed on the World Taekwondo Stage.

Despite signs of competition fatigue in his first fight, Chukwumerije managed to shrug off stiff challenge from his first Kazhastanian opponent. However, his efforts to rally against the experienced Iranian, who also won a silver medal at the last 2013 World Championships in Mexico, were not enough to secure a win for him. He fell 10-0 to the more experienced Iranian. With his efforts, Chukwumerije had garnered points to improve on his world rating scheduled to be released later this month. Speaking from Hamburg, after his loss, a disappointed Chukwumerije reflected after the fight, I did not get my tactics right, and I was a little tired from last week. In this sport, you get punished for not getting your tactics spot-on. A huge positive is that I gained 2.6 ranking points from getting to the quarter-finals, but I am a bit disappointed I could not secure the whole 10 points. He however, emphasized the need for the young upcoming players, as well as the current elite athletes to compete more internationally and gain international ranking points.

In the space of two weeks, I have gained about 12.6 points. By the time the next ranking comes, I would have moved up a lot of spaces on the world ranking list. The more Nigeria taekwondo athletes compete and gain those points, the more likely we would we can qualify more people for the Rio 2016 Olympics, since top six in the world qualify automatically. He noted that it was impossible to compete against nations that sponsor their teams for practically every point-ranking tournament, thus canvassed for more private sector and public sector support/investment for taekwondo, who is claimed is getting massively popular every other day, especially amongst teeming Nigerian youth.

The Ivory Coast international, who has scored 22 goals this season, pulled up with what appeared a groin problem early on in Sundays loss at Liverpool.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini, speaking on Tuesday at his news conference ahead of the sides game against Sunderland on Wednesday night, said: Maybe its not as bad as we thought at the beginning but he needs at least 10 days or two weeks to recover.

Yaya Toure Ruled Out for Two Weeks, Kompany Fit to Face Sunderland.

But Vincent Kompany will be fit to lead the side against the Black Cats. Striker, Sergio Aguero, who was a substitute in the 3-2 loss to Liverpool, is in contention for Wednesday.

Kompany was a doubt ahead of the loss to Liverpool after a heavy fall in training but was listed in the starting line-up at Anfield.

Vincent is fine- he is on the squad list for tomorrow and so is Sergio Aguero, Peelegrini added. Well see tomorrow who starts.

The Chilean boss said he still believes the club can win the Premier League title.

They are third in the table, seven points behind leaders Liverpool, with two games in hand- including the trip to Merseyside club Everton on 3rd May. Liverpool nonetheless have to host second-placed Chelseaon 27th May.

We win our two postponed games and were a point back. If you dont believe we can do it, you cant believe in anything, Pellegrini stressed.
